Martin competed in NASCAR for over 30 years, during which he earned the nickname "The Arkansas Traveler" due to his relentless pursuit of success. He won a total of 40 Cup Series races, including the prestigious Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in 1993 and 2009. He also finished as the runner-up in the championship standings a total of five times, a testament to his consistent performance over the course of multiple seasons.

Despite his success, Martin is perhaps best known for his reputation as a sportsman and a gentleman. He was known for his fierce competitiveness on the track, but also for his humble nature and respect for his fellow drivers.
