Jarvik's most notable invention was the development of the first permanent artificial heart. In 1982, he implanted the Jarvik-7 artificial heart into Barney Clark, who became the world's first recipient of a permanent artificial heart. While the device proved to be short-lived for Clark, it marked a major breakthrough in the field of cardiology and served as a stepping stone for further developments in the field. Jarvik continued to build on this achievement, developing smaller and more efficient models of artificial hearts that could be implanted more easily and safely.

In addition to his work in artificial heart development, Jarvik has also made significant contributions to the field of medical imaging. In 1986, he founded Jarvik Heart, a company focused on producing advanced, durable artificial heart systems. He also founded Jarvik Research, which focuses on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spinal cord.
