Al Worden was an American astronaut and fighter pilot who played an instrumental role in the Apollo 15 lunar mission. He was born on February 7, 1932, in Jackson, Michigan, and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating with a degree in military engineering, he became a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force and flew combat missions during the Korean War. Worden's flight to the moon came in 1971 as a Command Module Pilot on Apollo 15, the fourth manned lunar mission. He was responsible for piloting the spacecraft in orbit around the moon while his fellow crew members David Scott and James Irwin conducted lunar rover missions on the surface. During his three days in orbit, Worden was the first human to perform a deep-space spacewalk as he ventured outside the spacecraft to conduct maintenance on its exterior components.
