Worden's flight to the moon came in 1971 as a Command Module Pilot on Apollo 15, the fourth manned lunar mission. He was responsible for piloting the spacecraft in orbit around the moon while his fellow crew members David Scott and James Irwin conducted lunar rover missions on the surface. During his three days in orbit, Worden was the first human to perform a deep-space spacewalk as he ventured outside the spacecraft to conduct maintenance on its exterior components. He set a record for the furthest from the earth any human has ever been, at 2,235 miles from home.

After his historic flight to the moon, Worden retired from NASA in 1975 and turned to business, founding his own aerospace company, Maris Worden Aerospace. He has also authored several books about his experiences in space, including the memoir "Falling to Earth: An Apollo 15 Astronaut's Journey to the Moon." Worden has continued to advocate for space exploration throughout his life, serving as a trustee of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and a board member of the National Space Society. His legacy as a pioneering member of the American space program is firmly cemented in history. Read even more about Al Worden at Wikipedia
