Alan Bean was an American astronaut and artist, born in Wheeler, Texas, on March 15, 1932. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Texas, he chose to join the Navy, where he became a test pilot. In 1963, Bean was selected as one of the third group of astronauts by NASA. He served as backup lunar module pilot for the Apollo 9 mission and as lunar module pilot for Apollo 12, making him the fourth human to walk on the surface of the moon. More about Alan Bean

Bean's space career was devoted to the exploration of the moon.
