Shepard’s space career began in the late 1950s when he was selected to be one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. In 1961, he made history by piloting the first American manned mission – Mercury-Redstone 3 – into space. The 15-minute suborbital flight reached a maximum altitude of 116 miles and propelled Shepard into the national spotlight. His success bolstered America’s confidence in its space program and paved the way for future space missions.

Shepard continued to make contributions to the space program throughout his career. In 1971, he commanded the Apollo 14 mission – the third manned mission to land on the moon. Shepard became the fifth person – and the first one to hit a golf ball – to step foot on the lunar surface. He retired from NASA and the Navy in 1974, but his legacy in space exploration lives on today. Shepard passed away in 1998 at the age of 74. Read even more about Alan Shepard at Wikipedia
