Dave Leestma Autographs
Dave Leestma is an American astronaut and a veteran of three NASA space shuttle missions. He was born on May 28, 1949, in Muskegon, Michigan, and has contributed immensely to the American space program. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University, Leestma joined the United States Navy in 1971, where he served as a fighter pilot and test pilot for 14 years.
In 1980, Dave Leestma was selected to become an astronaut for NASA's Space Shuttle program. Leestma flew as a mission specialist on three different Space Shuttle missions between 1982 and 1992. His first mission was on Space Shuttle Columbia in November 1983, where he participated in experiments to study the effects of spaceflight on humans. In 1985, Leestma was a member of the crew on board the Space Shuttle Challenger that deployed the European Space Agency's first spacecraft, Giotto, to study Halley's Comet. Leestma's third and final Shuttle mission was in 1992, during which he served as the Payload Commander.
Dave Leestma retired from NASA in 1994 and went on to work in the aerospace industry. His remarkable contributions to the Space Shuttle program have undoubtedly played a major role in advancing space exploration initiatives. During his illustrious career, he has earned numerous accolades and awards, including the Defense Superior Service medal, the NASA Space Flight medal, and the Humanitarian Service medal. Dave Leestma's career has been a shining example of dedication, perseverance, and service to his country, making him a role model for future generations of astronauts to follow.
