He was born on May 19, 1955, in Johnson City, Tennessee, and attended East Tennessee State University where he played college baseball. During his career, Whitson had several notable moments, including winning a World Series championship with the New York Yankees in 1986. He was also named an All-Star in 1989 when he played for the San Diego Padres. Overall, Whitson compiled a record of 126-123, an ERA of 3.79, and 1,265 strikeouts over 2,222 innings pitched.
