James Lovell was born on March 25, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a retired astronaut who is best known for being the commander of the Apollo 13 mission. Lovell spent over 715 hours in space, including two Gemini missions and two Apollo missions. Lovell was a test pilot for the US Navy before he became an astronaut. He joined NASA's astronaut program in September 1962 and flew his first mission, Gemini 7, in December 1965. Lovell's second mission, Gemini 12, was in November 1966, and he set a new record for the longest spacewalk. Lovell's most famous mission was Apollo 13, which launched on April 11, 1970, with him as the commander. During the mission, an oxygen tank exploded, compromising the space module's safety.
