Joe Kerwin Autographs
Joe Kerwin was an American astronaut whose career in space spanned over three decades. Born on February 19, 1932, in Oak Park, Illinois, Kerwin obtained a degree in aerospace engineering from the United States Naval Academy. He then served as a naval aviator for several years before joining NASA in 1965. Kerwin's first mission in space was as a backup science pilot for the Apollo 12 mission. He later flew as the science pilot on Skylab 2 in 1973, where he spent 28 days in space and conducted several scientific experiments.
Kerwin made significant contributions to the United States' space program throughout his career in NASA. He was involved in the testing and design of spacecraft, including serving as the director of space and life sciences at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Kerwin was also instrumental in developing the space shuttle program, serving as the director of space and life sciences for the shuttle during its early development stages. He retired from NASA in 1991, and in recognition of his contributions to the space program, he was awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal.
After retiring from NASA, Kerwin continued to serve as an adviser and consultant to various space agencies, including the European Space Agency, the Russian Federal Space Agency, and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency. Kerwin's expertise in space medicine and physiology proved invaluable in the development of spaceflight programs throughout the world. He was also highly involved in promoting STEM education, inspiring the next generation of space scientists and engineers. Joe Kerwin passed away on December 29, 2021, at the age of 89, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in space exploration.
