Joseph Kerwin Autographs
Joseph Kerwin was a renowned American astronaut, physician and retired Captain in the United States Navy. His space career spanned over two decades, starting with his selection for NASA’s astronaut program in 1965. Kerwin was part of the astronaut support crew for the Apollo 10 mission and as part of the backup crew for the Apollo 13 mission. Later, in 1973, he became the first American physician to go to space when he participated in the Skylab 2 mission, which lasted for 28 days.
During his time in the Skylab space station, Kerwin carried out numerous experiments related to human physiology, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, and other scientific fields. He collaborated with fellow space travelers, Darwin Atkinson and Jack Lousma, to conduct more than 70 investigations, taking advantage of zero gravity conditions to broaden the knowledge of the medical implications of space travel. These research tests were vital to understanding the complex effects of prolonged weightlessness and radiation exposure on humans, thus paving the way for future space missions.
After his space career ended, Kerwin continued his career as a physician, serving in various medical leadership roles, including Vice President of Medical Services for Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Solutions. Kerwin's medical and space expertise was instrumental in contributing to medical programs and research for numerous agencies such as NASA, the Department of Defense, and the National Institutes of Health. His impactful contributions to the field of space exploration and the global medical community have been acknowledged with numerous prestigious awards and honors.
