Mark Lee Autographs
Mark Lee is a former NASA astronaut and veteran of four space shuttle missions. Born on August 14, 1952, in Viroqua, Wisconsin, Lee was fascinated with space from a young age. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the United States Air Force Academy in 1974, followed by a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975. After serving as an Air Force officer for several years, Lee was selected by NASA to become an astronaut in 1984.
Lee's first spaceflight was as a mission specialist on STS-30, which launched on May 4, 1989, aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. During this mission, he helped deploy the Magellan spacecraft, which mapped the surface of Venus, and also conducted a number of other scientific experiments. Lee went on to fly three more shuttle missions, including STS-47 in 1992, which was the first joint mission between NASA and the Japanese Space Agency, and STS-64 in 1994, during which he conducted the first untethered spacewalk using the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER) device.
In addition to his spaceflight career, Lee has also held a number of important positions within NASA, including Chief of the Astronaut Office's EVA Branch, Deputy Associate Administrator for Space Flight, and Director of NASA's Human Spaceflight Programs. Lee retired from NASA in 2001 and currently serves as a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His contributions to space exploration have helped pave the way for future generations of astronauts and scientists to explore the mysteries of the universe.
