Scott Carpenter Autograph

Scott Carpenter was an American naval officer, test pilot, and astronaut who was born on May 1, 1925, in Boulder, Colorado. He attended the University of Colorado, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Carpenter's career in the United States Navy began in 1949, and he eventually became a test pilot for the Navy. After being selected as one of the original seven Mercury astronauts by NASA, Carpenter made history on May 24, 1962, when he became the second American to orbit the Earth aboard the Aurora 7 spacecraft. Carpenter was instrumental in the development of the space program during its early years, from his work with Project Mercury to his contributions to the Apollo program. After his historic flight, he continued to work for NASA, serving as backup commander for the Gemini 5 mission and working on various other projects.
