William Lenoir Autograph

William Lenoir was born in 1939 in Miami, Florida. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Miami in 1961 and went on to receive his Masters in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. Lenoir embarked on a distinguished career in the United States Navy, serving as a nuclear submarine commander before being selected by NASA to become an astronaut in 1967. More about William Lenoir

Lenoir made his first flight into space aboard the Columbia on the STS-5 mission in November 1982. During the mission, he and his fellow crew members conducted numerous experiments and tests in space, including deploying two commercial satellites and testing the Remote Manipulator System. Lenoir's second spaceflight was on board the Challenger for the STS-51B mission in April 1985. During this mission, he used the Shuttle Pallet Satellite to further extend the practical applications of space research. Lenoir was honored for his immense contributions to the field of space exploration, receiving numerous awards including the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal and the Defense Distinguished Service Medal.

William Lenoir passed away in August 2010, but his legacy endures in the world of space exploration.
