Williams started his wrestling career in 1982, where he competed in various independent circuits before joining the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) in 1987. In 1989, Williams joined the Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF) and won the UWF Heavyweight Championship multiple times. He was famous for his hard-hitting wrestling style and earned the nickname "Dr. Death" for his toughness and tenacity in the ring. He also had a brief stint in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in the '90s. However, his most notable wrestling career was with the Tokyo-based promotion All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW). He became the AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion in 1994 and held the title for over 500 days, making him one of the most dominant wrestlers in AJPW's history.

Williams retired from professional wrestler in 2004 after battling with throat cancer. However, his legacy as a wrestler lives on, and he is regarded as one of the toughest and most respected wrestlers of all time. Steve Williams was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019, an acknowledgment to his outstanding career in wrestling.
