Al Hrabosky, nicknames “The Mad Hungarian,” was a former American Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, born on July 21, 1949, in Oakland, California. Hrabosky started his baseball journey in 1966 when the St. Louis Cardinals signed him as an amateur free agent. He made his MLB debut in 1970 and played for 13 seasons in the league, from 1970 to 1982, for the Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, and the Atlanta Braves. Hrabosky was popular for his unusual pitching style and behavior on the field. He was known for his passionate delivery and aggressive approach towards the game. Before every pitch, he would turn his back completely towards the hitter, take a deep breath, and then spin back around to hurl the ball at the batter with his signature sweeping delivery. He would also talk to himself and repeatedly mutter under his breath to psyche himself up before a pitch, which gained him the nickname “The Mad Hungarian.” However, despite his unorthodox style, Hrabosky became one of the most feared and respected pitchers of his time.

After retiring from baseball, Hrabosky worked as a color commentator for the Cardinals' telecasts and later for ESPN. He was also inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Hrabosky is remembered as one of the most distinctive characters in baseball history, both for his wild demeanor on the field and his impressive skills as a pitcher who led the league in saves twice and earned a place as an All-Star player in 1975.
