Howe's professional baseball career began in 1971 when he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for the Pirates for two seasons before being traded to the Houston Astros. Howe played for the Astros for five seasons, and it was during this time that he had his most successful years as a player. He was a reliable second baseman with a decent bat, and he was known for his solid defense. After his playing career ended, Howe transitioned into coaching and eventually became a manager in the MLB. His most notable managerial stint was with the Oakland Athletics from 1996-2002, where he led the team to three playoff appearances, and he was named the American League Manager of the Year in 2000.

Despite his success as a coach and manager, Howe will always be remembered for his dedication to the game of baseball. His skills as a player and his ability to lead and inspire his players made him a respected figure in the league. He remains an inspiration to young players and a role model for others who aspire to a career in baseball. His legacy as a player and manager will continue to be celebrated for many years to come.
