James began his MLB career with the White Sox in 1978, appearing in 25 games as a relief pitcher. He became a starter for the team in 1980 and had a breakout season in 1985 when he recorded 32 saves and was named to the All-Star team. He finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting that year and helped the White Sox win their division title. James continued to play for the White Sox until he was traded to the Atlanta Braves in 1987.

After playing for the Braves for one season, James signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1988 but was forced to retire due to injury before the season began. In his career, he recorded 50 saves, 22 wins, and 31 losses with a 3.68 earned run average (ERA). Despite his relatively short career, James remains a beloved figure in baseball, particularly in Chicago where he is remembered as one of the best relievers in White Sox history.
