In 1972, Johnson made his Major League debut with the Houston Astros and played for them until 1977. During his time with the Astros, he was primarily used as a pinch hitter and played as a first baseman and catcher. Johnson's career truly took off when he was traded to the New York Yankees in 1977, where he played for four seasons. He hit 20 or more home runs in each of his four seasons with the Yankees and was known for his power hitting abilities.
