Hill quickly became one of the rising stars on the PGA Tour, winning his first tournament at the Cleveland Open in 1961, just two years after turning pro. His aggressive playing style and sharp wit made him a fan favorite, although it also brought him in conflict with some fellow players and the golfing authorities. He won a total of 13 PGA Tour titles, including the prestigious Ryder Cup and World Cup titles. His best showing in a major championship was a tie for second at the 1970 US Open. He also played in the British Open several times, finishing in the top ten four times.

In addition to his playing career, Hill was also known for his outspokenness and humor, which often landed him in trouble with golf officials and media. He famously said about the greens at Augusta National, "They put an outhouse on every third green and fired the greenskeeper." He also questioned the fairness of some tournament courses, including the Oakmont Country Club, which he described as "a monster that eats little boys." Despite his controversies, he remained a popular figure in the golf world and was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 1986. Hill passed away on September 26, 2011, at the age of 74.
