Elston Howard

Elston Howard was an American baseball player born on February 23, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest catchers to have played the game. Howard's baseball journey began in the Negro League where he played for the Kansas City Monarchs for two seasons. In 1950, he signed with the New York Yankees and was assigned to their minor league team in Binghamton. He made his Major League debut in 1955 and played as a backup catcher for the Yankees before becoming the starting catcher in 1960. More about Elston Howard

In his career, Elston Howard played for 14 seasons, 13 of which were with the New York Yankees. During his time with the Yankees, he was a 10-time All-Star selection and won four Gold Glove awards. Howard became the first African-American player to win the Most Valuable Player Award in 1963 when he helped the Yankees win the World Series. In his career, he played a total of 1,471 games with an impressive .274 batting average, 167 home runs, and 733 runs batted in.

Elston Howard retired from baseball in 1967 after playing for the Boston Red Sox in his last season. Though he had a relatively short career compared to some of the other legends of the game, he achieved numerous milestones and broke down racial barriers in baseball. Through his accomplishments, he became a role model for generations of African-American baseball players who followed in his footsteps.
