Gene Harris was born on December 5, 1964, in Sebring, Florida. He was a right-handed pitcher, who played for 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). Harris started his career with the Montreal Expos in 1989 as a reliever. In 1990, he became a starter and posted 11 wins with a 2.98 ERA. Harris' most successful season was in 1993 while he was with the Philadelphia Phillies. He posted a 9-3 record, a 1.83 ERA, 17 saves, and was named an All-Star. During his career, Harris played in 703 games, earned 54 saves, and posted a 32-46 record with a 3.75 ERA. He retired from professional baseball in 2001, after playing his final season for the New York Mets.

Off the field, Harris was known for his charitable work and philanthropy. He established the "Gene Harris Youth Foundation" which supported children in need in his hometown of Sebring, Florida. Harris passed away on November 9, 2020, at the age of 55, after a battle with kidney disease. He will always be remembered as a dedicated and hard-working athlete who contributed to the game of baseball in many significant ways.
