Born on December 13, 1960, in Ventura, California, Robinson was an alumnus of Pacifica High School and later played baseball at California State University, Fresno. Robinson began his MLB career with the Detroit Tigers in 1987 and immediately showed promise. He made his debut on April 8, 1987, and recorded his first win against the Milwaukee Brewers five days later. In his rookie season, he posted a record of 13-6 with a 3.79 ERA, earning him the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Robinson continued to pitch for the Tigers until 1990 when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Robinson played for five different teams during his career, including the New York Yankees, California Angels, and the Kansas City Royals.
