After an impressive college career, Hardin turned professional, signing with the Baltimore Orioles in 1967. He quickly became one of the best pitchers in the league, thanks to his excellent fastball and natural abilities on the field. In his first season, he went 13-15, with a 2.51 ERA, and over 200 strikeouts, earning him the American League Rookie of the Year award. He followed that up with another strong season, before injuries slowed him down in 1969. Despite this setback, Hardin continued to play for several more years, eventually retiring in 1972, after a series of injuries had taken their toll.

Even after his playing days were over, Hardin remained connected to the sport that he loved. He worked as a coach and a scout, helping to develop the next generation of players. He was also recognized for his contributions to the game, being inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.
