Higbe’s career took off in 1941, when he became the ace of the pitching rotation for the Dodgers. He accumulated 22 wins that season and led the league in strikeouts. In 1942, he helped lead the Dodgers to their first pennant in two decades with a 22-9 record, 3.10 ERA, and 113 strikeouts. Higbe earned the nickname “Hot Potato” due to his fiery temperament, which could sometimes lead to altercations on the field.

In 1943, Higbe was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he played for two seasons before being drafted into the military in 1945. He returned to the Dodgers for one more season in 1947 before ending his baseball career with the Boston Braves in 1950.
