Mike Jacobs was born on October 30, 1980, in Chula Vista, California. He attended Hilltop High School, where he played baseball and was named to the All-CIF San Diego Section team. After graduating in 1999, Jacobs was drafted by the New York Mets in the 38th round of the MLB Draft, but he chose to attend Grossmont College instead. Jacobs made his Major League debut with the Mets in 2005 and played in 30 games, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 23 runs. He continued to show his power in the following season, hitting 20 home runs and recording 77 RBI. However, he struggled with injuries and consistency in the next few years and was traded to the Florida Marlins in 2008.
