Higgins was a utility infielder and played for the Philadelphia Athletics before joining the Red Sox in 1934. He started as a third baseman for the Red Sox and led the American League in fielding percentage for three consecutive years. Higgins also played for the Detroit Tigers and was the team captain until he was traded back to the Red Sox in 1942. Higgins’ return to Boston was fruitful, and he helped the team win its first pennant in 28 years. He was also the manager of the Red Sox from 1955 to 1959.

After his playing career, Higgins became a manager and led the Red Sox to their second American League pennant in 1946, though they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Higgins managed the Red Sox for five seasons and later managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1960 to 1961. His managerial career ended without a championship, but he was known for his strong leadership skills and was respected by his players.
