Hughson's professional baseball career began in 1939, when he started playing for the Hartford Bees in the minor leagues. His excellent performance in the minor leagues got him signed up by the Boston Red Sox, and he made his MLB debut on September 6, 1941. Hughson emerged as a dominant starting pitcher in the 1942 season, recording an impressive 22 wins and just 6 losses. He also led the American League (AL) with 10 shutouts and 3.01 earned run average (ERA). In recognition of his outstanding performance, Hughson was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honor that year.

Unfortunately, Hughson's career was shortened by a shoulder injury, which forced him to retire at the age of 33. Nevertheless, he left an indelible mark on the game of baseball and will be remembered as one of the greatest pitchers to have played for the Boston Red Sox. Hughson's career stats are impressive, with a 96-54 win-loss record, a 2.94 ERA, and 722 strikeouts in 1323 innings pitched.
