Tommy Hottovy was born on February 9, 1981, in Kansas City, Missouri. In 2004, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball Draft as a left-handed pitcher. Hottovy made his professional debut in 2005 for the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League. During his brief stint in the majors, Hottovy appeared in nine games, pitching a total of just 8.1 innings. He compiled a 6.48 ERA with five strikeouts and four walks. In 2012, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals, but he never appeared in a game for the team.
