Smith was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the first round (fifth overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft. He spent his entire career with the Chargers, playing as a linebacker for 10 seasons (1983-1992). He was known for his toughness and physicality on the field, and he was named to the Pro Bowl twice (1987 and 1988). Smith was also a key member of the Chargers' defense during their run to the Super Bowl in the 1994 season, although they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the championship game.

After retiring from football, Smith worked as a television analyst for college football games and also co-hosted a radio show in San Diego. He tragically passed away in 2018 after a long battle with cancer at the age of 56. Despite his untimely passing, Smith's legacy in the game of football lives on, and he will always be remembered as one of the best linebackers to ever play for the San Diego Chargers.
