Byner was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 10th round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He spent seven seasons with the Browns, earning a reputation as a tough, hard-nosed runner who could also catch the ball out of the backfield. In 1987, Byner rushed for over 1,000 yards and was named to his first Pro Bowl. He was a key player for the Browns during their successful playoff runs in the late 1980s, but is perhaps best remembered for a fumble in the 1987 AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos that cost the Browns a chance to tie the game in the final minutes.

After leaving the Browns in 1991, Byner played for the Washington Redskins, where he became an integral part of their offense. He spent five seasons in Washington, earning another Pro Bowl selection in 1990 and helping the Redskins win Super Bowl XXVI in 1991. Byner retired after the 1997 season with 8,261 rushing yards, 4,605 receiving yards, and 71 total touchdowns in his career. He was inducted into the Cleveland Browns Ring of Honor in 2015, a testament to his impact on the team and the city of Cleveland. Read even more about Earnest Byner at Wikipedia
