After his playing career ended, Kitchens began his coaching career at the college level, serving as a tight ends coach at Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2004. He then spent time coaching at various colleges before returning to the NFL as a running backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2007. Kitchens spent most of his coaching career with the Cardinals, serving as a tight ends coach, quarterbacks coach, and offensive coordinator. In 2018, he joined the Cleveland Browns as their running backs coach and became their offensive coordinator midway through the season.

In 2019, Kitchens was promoted to head coach of the Cleveland Browns. However, his tenure with the team only lasted one season as he was let go following a disappointing 6-10 record. Despite the short-lived stint as a head coach, Kitchens is regarded as a well-respected and innovative offensive mind in the NFL. He has played a significant role in the development of quarterbacks like Carson Palmer and Baker Mayfield, and his impact on the game of football will not be forgotten.
