However, it was Schnellenberger's career as a coach that truly made him a legend in American football. He started his career as an assistant coach with the University of Kentucky in 1959, but it wasn't until he became the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 1970 that he gained national recognition. While with the Dolphins, Schnellenberger helped develop their vaunted "No-Name" offense, which led the team to three consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

However, Schnellenberger's greatest achievement as a coach came when he took over as head coach at the University of Miami in 1979. At the time, the Miami football program was in disarray, but Schnellenberger quickly turned things around. In just five seasons, he led Miami to a national championship in 1983, a feat that had never been achieved by a southern school in the modern era. Schnellenberger continued to coach at other schools throughout his career, including the University of Louisville and Florida Atlantic University, but it was his time at Miami that cemented his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in American football history.
