In 1964, Kelly was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the eighth round of the NFL Draft, and he quickly made an impact. During his rookie season, Kelly played in all fourteen games, rushing for 299 yards and scoring three touchdowns. He continued to perform at a high level over the next few years, helping the Browns reach the playoffs in 1967 and 1968. It was during the 1968 season that Kelly truly shone, as he rushed for an impressive 1,239 yards and scored fifteen touchdowns, earning the league's Most Valuable Player award.

Over the course of his career, Kelly rushed for 7,274 yards and scored seventy-four touchdowns, cementing his place as one of the greatest running backs of his time. He was selected to the Pro Bowl six times and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994. Off the field, Kelly has been involved in various business ventures, including a car dealership and a restaurant.
