Dickey began his football career playing for Kansas State University, where he set several passing records and led the team to a run of victories in the late 1960s. He was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1971, where he played for six seasons before moving on to the Green Bay Packers in 1976. It was with the Packers that Dickey found his stride, and he led the team to two consecutive playoff appearances in 1982 and 1983. After his time with the Packers, Dickey finished his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, retiring from professional football in 1985 with a reputation as one of the best quarterbacks of his era.

Following his retirement from professional football, Dickey remained involved in the sport through coaching and mentoring. He worked as an assistant coach at several universities, including the University of Memphis and the University of North Texas.
