Motley made history when he became the first African American to compete in a professional football game in 1946. He played for the Cleveland Browns for nine seasons, helping the team win four All-America Football Conference championships and two NFL championships. Motley was known for his speed, strength, and agility as a running back and fullback, and was also a formidable defensive player.

Motley retired from football in 1955, but continued to be a trailblazer in other areas of his life. He became the first African American to serve as a Cleveland city councilman in 1966, advocating for social justice and equality.
