However, it was his successful professional career that elevated Prater as one of the top kickers in the NFL. He was undrafted in 2006 but was eventually picked up by the Miami Dolphins before being waived at the end of the preseason. Prater then had stints with several teams, including the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos, before finding his footing with the Detroit Lions. While with the Broncos, he set a record for the longest field goal in NFL history, kicking a 64-yard field goal in December 2013.

He has an average field goal percentage of 83.2%, having made 264 out of 317 field goal attempts, with a career-long 64-yarder. He also holds the NFL record for the most field goals over 50 yards in a single season.
