He was born on May 1, 1930, in Trinity, Texas, and raised in San Francisco, California. Matson attended George Washington High School, where he excelled in various sports. He was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and track and field. He received a scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco, where he became an All-American running back. Matson was a versatile player known for his speed, agility, and strength. He played for the Chicago Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions, and Philadelphia Eagles during his NFL career. He was drafted by the Cardinals as the third overall pick in the first round of the 1952 NFL Draft.
