Cunningham was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft. He played for the Patriots for nine seasons (1973-1982) and became one of the team's most reliable running backs. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons (1977-78) and finished his career with 5,453 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns. Cunningham's legacy extends beyond his impressive football career - he is also credited with breaking down racial barriers in the sport. In 1970, Cunningham and his USC teammate, John Papadakis, were the first African-American players to receive a standing ovation from an Alabama crowd after they led USC to a victory over the Crimson Tide.
