Born and raised in New Mexico, McDonald attended the University of Oklahoma, where he played for the Sooners football team. He was a standout player and was named to numerous All-American teams during his time at the university. In 1957, McDonald was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the NFL draft.
