Laich's hockey career began in 2001 when he was selected 193rd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL Entry Draft. After a brief stint with the Senators, he was traded to the Washington Capitals in 2004, where he played for the majority of his career. Laich played a key role in helping the Capitals make the playoffs for the first time in several years in the 2007-2008 season. During his prime, he was known for his speed, agility, and versatility both on defense and offense.

In 2017, after playing only a few games with the Los Angeles Kings, Brooks Laich announced his retirement from professional ice hockey. He played a total of 764 NHL games, scoring 134 goals and 198 assists. Laich was an excellent team player, known for his leadership qualities and solid work ethic. Today, he is remembered as one of the most reliable and well-rounded players of his time, having contributed significantly to the Capitals' success during his career.
