He had a prolific career spanning over 16 years in the National Hockey League (NHL), playing for teams such as Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, and Pittsburgh Penguins. Olczyk was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks as the third overall pick in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He made an immediate impact in his rookie season by scoring 38 goals and becoming the youngest player to score a hat trick in the NHL. Olczyk's offensive abilities were apparent, as he contributed largely to the Blackhawks' success during his tenure, including their 1992 Stanley Cup finals appearance. He also played for Team USA in the 1984 Olympic Games, where he became the youngest player in the tournament's history.

In his retirement from the NHL, Olczyk continued to play an active role in hockey as a broadcaster and coach. He has been a color analyst on several broadcast networks, including ESPN, NBC Sports, and MSG Network. Besides, he was the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2003-2004 season. Olczyk's contributions to hockey have earned him numerous awards and recognition, including induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012.
