Rod Gilbert is one of the greatest hockey players of all time. He was born on July 1, 1941, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After honing his skills in local leagues, he joined the New York Rangers as a right-winger in 1960. He quickly became one of their most important players, leading the team to two Stanley Cup Finals and winning numerous awards along the way. Gilbert played for the New York Rangers for 18 seasons from 1960 to 1978, scoring an impressive 406 goals and 615 assists over the course of his career. In 1973, he was voted the winner of the Lady Byng Trophy, awarded each year to the player who exhibits the best sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct. Gilbert was also named to the NHL All-Star team eight times and represented Canada in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
