Kurvers' professional hockey career began in 1984 when he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens. He went on to play for several teams, including the Minnesota North Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders, and the Anaheim Ducks. Kurvers earned a reputation as an offensive defenseman, scoring 421 points in 659 regular season games.

Kurvers' professional hockey career was impressive, but it was his stint with the Canadiens that he is perhaps best remembered for. During the 1985-1986 season, Kurvers racked up 66 points in 76 games, a feat that caught the attention of the entire league. He was awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy for his dedication and perseverance in the sport of hockey during the 1988-1989 season.
