Akinori Otsuka is a former Japanese professional baseball player who enjoyed a successful career as a relief pitcher. He was born on the 13th of January, 1972 in Chiba, Japan. Otsuka started his baseball career in high school and continued to play in college. In 1997, he was drafted by the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and pitched for the team until 2003. Otsuka continued to pitch well for the Padres in 2006, with an ERA of 2.30 and 32 saves. However, he suffered a torn ligament in his pitching arm towards the end of the season, which required Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire 2007 season, but signed with the Texas Rangers in 2008. Otsuka performed well for the Rangers, with an ERA of 1.44 in 2008 and 2.91 in 2009.
