Bridwell made his major league debut for the Giants in 1905. He was a key player for the team, leading them to three National League pennants in 1905, 1911, and 1912. Bridwell is best known for his role in the "Merkle's Boner" game in 1908. Facing the Chicago Cubs, the Giants had a runner on first base in the bottom of the 9th inning when Fred Merkle hit a single to center field. The runner on first, Bridwell, never touched second base and was therefore ruled out after Cubs' second baseman Johnny Evers retrieved the ball and tagged second base. The game was then called a tie, but the Cubs eventually won the pennant. Bridwell was also a part of the 1912 World Series-winning Giants team, where he batted .385 in the series.

Bridwell retired in 1916 after playing eleven seasons in the major league. He continued to play semi-professional baseball in Indiana and served as a coach for various teams after his playing career. Al Bridwell died on January 23, 1969, in Cincinnati, Ohio, but his legacy as a key player for the New York Giants during the early 1900s remains. He was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. Read even more about Al Bridwell at Wikipedia
