Campanis played as a second baseman and shortstop during his brief stint in the majors, but his true calling came after retiring as a player when he became a coach and eventually an executive. He continued to work for the Dodgers organization for over 40 years, serving as a scout, coach, director of international scouting, and eventually the general manager. In the 1960s and ‘70s, Campanis was responsible for drafting and developing many of the Dodgers’ star players, including Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, and Ron Cey.

Despite all of his accomplishments, Campanis’ career was marred by a controversial interview he gave on Nightline in 1987 in which he made racist remarks about the ability of African Americans to become baseball executives. The comments caused a firestorm of controversy and ultimately led to Campanis' resignation as general manager. However, many of his former colleagues defended him, noting his long-standing support of minority players and his role in promoting diversity in the sport.
