Al Downing was a left-handed pitcher who played for 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1961 to 1977. Born on June 28, 1941, in Trenton, New Jersey, Downing began his professional baseball career with the New York Yankees in 1961. He played for the Yankees for eight seasons, during which he established himself as one of the team's top pitchers. Downing's fastball and curveball made him a formidable opponent, and he was known for his ability to strike out batters. He was a two-time All-Star during his time with the Yankees.
Downing is perhaps best known for giving up Hank Aaron's 715th home run on April 8, 1974, which broke Babe Ruth's record for career home runs. Despite the momentous occasion, Downing remained a respected and beloved figure in the baseball world. In fact, his contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
Over the course of his career, Downing played for several teams, including the Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He retired from baseball in 1977 with a career record of 123 wins and 107 losses. After retiring from the sport, Downing continued to be involved in baseball, working as a commentator and analyst for several teams. He also established the Al Downing Tampa Bay Baseball Academy in Florida, which provides training and coaching for young baseball players.
