Al Oliver

Al Oliver is a former American professional baseball player who played from 1968 to 1985. Oliver was born in Portsmouth, Ohio and played his college baseball at Ohio University before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1968. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in September of that year, playing in just eight games. In 1969, he became a full-time player for the Pirates, batting .285 and hitting five home runs in his rookie season. More about Al Oliver

Over the course of his career, Oliver played for numerous teams including the Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a seven-time All-Star and won the National League batting title in 1982 with a .331 average while playing for the Expos. Oliver was known for his consistency at the plate and was particularly skilled at hitting to all fields, which made him difficult to defend against. He finished his career with a .303 batting average, 2,743 hits, and 219 home runs.

In addition to his achievements on the field, Oliver was also known for his leadership and sportsmanship. He was respected by teammates and opponents alike and was particularly influential in the African American community. After retiring from baseball, Oliver continued to work in the community and remained involved in baseball as a coach and instructor. Oliver's contributions to the game of baseball have been recognized by numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.
