Alan Ashby is a former professional baseball player and current baseball broadcaster from Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on July 8, 1951 and grew up in a baseball-loving family where his father also played in college. Ashby is best known for his 17-year career as a catcher in Major League Baseball (MLB), playing for teams like the Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays, and Houston Astros.
Ashby began his MLB career with the Indians in 1973 and quickly established himself as a reliable catcher known for his defensive skills, pitch framing ability, and strong arm. He was traded to the Blue Jays in 1977 and played for them for four seasons before being traded again, this time to the Houston Astros, where he played for the rest of his career. Ashby was part of the Astros team that reached their first and only World Series in 2005, serving as a special assistant coach to then-manager Phil Garner.
After retiring from baseball in 1989, Alan Ashby transitioned to a career in broadcasting, providing color commentary for the Blue Jays and then later the Astros. He became a popular analyst known for his in-depth analysis of the game and ability to provide insight into the players and strategies at work. Ashby was recognized for his contributions to the game with induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004.
