He was born on July 8, 1951 and grew up in a baseball-loving family where his father also played in college. Ashby began his MLB career with the Indians in 1973 and quickly established himself as a reliable catcher known for his defensive skills, pitch framing ability, and strong arm. He was traded to the Blue Jays in 1977 and played for them for four seasons before being traded again, this time to the Houston Astros, where he played for the rest of his career.
