Alex Gonzalez is a former professional baseball player who was born on February 15, 1973, in Cagua, Venezuela. He began his baseball career in 1994 when he signed with the Toronto Blue Jays as an amateur free agent. Gonzalez made his major league debut in 1998 with the Blue Jays and played for them until 2001.
During his career, Gonzalez was known for his exceptional defense as a shortstop. He won his first Gold Glove award in 1999 and his second in 2001. In addition to his defensive prowess, Gonzalez was also a solid hitter, hitting a career-high 20 home runs in 2001 with the Blue Jays.
After leaving the Blue Jays, Gonzalez played for several other teams including the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Cincinnati Reds. He retired from baseball in 2006 with a career batting average of .243, 137 home runs, and 548 runs batted in. Despite not being a Hall of Fame caliber player, Gonzalez was respected by his peers for his excellent defense and professionalism on and off the field.
